ProAct®

ProAct® is a Plant Health Promoter based on Harp-N-Tek®, a proprietary harpin protein technology from Plant Health Care, Inc. When ProAct® is applied, the harpin protein active ingredient binds to harpin receptors on the plant. These receptors respond to harpin as if it were a pathogen, and this reaction initiates an "inside-out plant response" that turns on a plant's own intrinsic growth and stress-defense capabilities.

ProAct™ is a tried and true product that has been used in the agricultural industry for years, both in vegetables and row crops.

MODE OF ACTION:

  • Harpin-induced plant growth effects can include increased ion exchange reaction; elevated protein, sugar, and starch transportation; increased nutrient uptake; increased net photosynthesis; and physiological changes associated with transpiration and respiration.

  • Harpin-induced defense effects include hypersensitive response; ion exchange and oxidative burst. which induces production of active oxygen and K/CI effluxes and Ca/H influxes; induction of salicylic acid accumulation locally and systemically; activation of multiple plant defense pathways, including salicylic acid pathways, jasmonic acid pathways, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) mediated pathways; as well as novel gene induction and pathways.

  • Unlike most crop inputs, ProAct's performance is not a function of plant absorption or residual; in fact, there are no detectable residues of harpin within hours of application. Therefore, ProAct is rain-fast after 30 minutes or when spray residues have dried.

PACKAGING, FORMULATION, AND RE-ENTRY INFORMATION:

  • Available in a 20 ounce foil bag.
One bag treats 40 acres of corn or 20 acres of soybeans.

  • Excellent safety profile, easy to use, and not a restricted use material; REI is 4 hours; PHI is O days.

  • USE RATE: Apply ProAct at .5-2 oz per acre.

  • TIMING: Ideally, 1st application should be made 2-3 weeks after emergence .

  • MIX AND USE PROMPTLY: Within 8 hours of mixing.

  • PARTIAL BAGS: Reseal opened packets to minimize exposure to air and moisture. Use within 3 weeks.

8 Things You Need to Know (click + to expand)

+ 1. COMPLETELY SOLUBLE

With a use rate of one-half ounce of ProAct per 5 to 10 gallons of water per acre, clogging is not an issue.

+ 2. TANK MIXES WITH ANYTHING

As long as ProAct is added first with any other dry materials, mixing with liquid products will not cause any issues.

+ 3. PROACT ACTIVATES A PLANT’S GROWTH AND DEFENSE MECHANISMS

ProAct turns on the plant’s ability to grow faster, and that faster growth leads to bigger and longer roots, stronger stalk strength, more leaf area, and most of the time, higher yields.

+ 4. FEWER NEMATODES

When the plant's defenses get activated, one of the benefits is that it becomes less attractive to all predatory nematodes. Early application of ProAct will prevent more nematode penetration as ProAct is a preventative product and not a reactionary product.

+ 5. SYSTEMIC EFFECTS WITHOUT TRANSLOCATION

After the Harpin αβ protein binds to the receptor sites on the plant, the plant does all the work from that point forward. Any additional residue will break down within hours.

+ 6. SIMILAR TO THE PLANT HEALTH EFFECT FROM STROBILURIN CHEMISTRY

The physiological process that plants experience following an application of ProAct is very similar to the process that’s triggered by an application of a strobilurin fungicide (Headline, Quadris, Stratego, Evito). But while the plant health effect from ProAct and strobilurin chemistry is similar, the magnitude of the effect from ProAct is greater. Once triggered, the effect from ProAct is more effective and it lasts longer than from a strobilurin product.

+ 7. PRE-V6 APPLICATIONS OF STROBILURINS WILL NOT PREVENT LATE SEASON INFESTATIONS OF GRAY LEAF SPOT

While strobilurins are effective fungicides, they only protect the tissue that was sprayed. That means that all of the leaf tissue that emerges after spraying is susceptible to disease infection. Consequently, an early season application of a strobilurin can be less potent than ProAct. Use strobilurins for disease control when needed and apply ProAct for the yield bump that can be achieved from improved plant health and growth.

+ 8. PROACT IMPROVES DROUGHT TOLERANCE

Plants that are treated with ProAct between V2 and V6 will have bigger roots and that always helps in low moisture situations. ProAct works by better regulating stomate openings which results in reduced transpiration loss and more conserved water for the plant.

In the extreme drought conditions of 2012, yield differences between treated and untreated frequently exceeded 25 bushels per acre in corn that averaged less than 100 bushels/acre. In fields where the corn wasn’t even harvested, ProAct-treated corn remained standing while the untreated corn was almost completely lodged and on the ground.
